Dear Jesus, you entered our world on Christmas as the Prince of Peace. This Advent, as we strive to become the-best-version-of-ourselves, fill us with a deep and abiding peace. Help us share that peace with everyone we encounter, especially those who need it most.
May we stay aware of the joy you bring into our lives. We want to find you in the everyday moments and come with hearts of gratitude to your manger on Christmas.
May the light of your love always shine in our hearts. As Christmas draws closer, we marvel at your great love for us. Let your love transform every aspect of our lives and touch everyone we encounter. Our hearts are open to you, Jesus.
Amen.
Dear Parents,
The key word for preparing ourselves for Christmas in the second week of Advent is Peace. We are asked to stop to remember, and look forward to the peace, joy and love that is to come when we celebrate the feast of Christmas.
Click here to read a beautiful letter from Sr Abeba in Bulbula expressing much gratitude for our wonderful donation to the community. We pray for peace for all.
As the school year draws to a conclusion there is much to celebrate, to be grateful for and to rejoice in.

As we end the 2019 school year I would also like to thank you all for your year of contributions. We were able to say thank you in a small way with morning tea for the volunteer work you have done alongside us, in caring for the children of Our Lady Star of the Sea school to provide opportunities for them to learn and flourish. Our students are at the centre of our work together, our core business and I have enjoyed the year immensely, enjoying our community and its energy, with great and generous people.
School Choir:
Congratulations to all the children who did a wonderful job of singing carols in the Park. A special thankyou to you as parents in getting the students there and particularly to Michael Sheridan, Sue Constable and Natalie Skahill who prepared the students and Kevin Mitchell who accompanied on guitar. Such a wonderful community event. If any of the choir wanted to attend Christmas eve Carols at 5.30 pm on Christmas Eve , 24/12/19, in OG we have been asked if the choir could sing 1st verse ‘Away in a Manger’ during the service. Please bring you children dressed as angels and shepherds if you are able.
Seesaw Learning Journal:
In the Holy Season, may the spirit of Christmas bring you peace and joy.
Wishing you a very happy and safe Christmas on behalf of all the staff at Our Lady Star of the Sea.
Wishing you all many Christmas blessings.

Character Strengths
Over the last few weeks our Year 5 students have been preparing for taking on a greater leadership role as they transition into Year 6 for 2020. This has included preparation for becoming a buddy for their Prep companion, reflecting on what sort of leaders they want to be and exploring their Character Strengths.
Character Strengths are the positive parts of your personality that impact how you think, feel and behave and are the keys to you being your best self, and the things you might want to work on. Character Strengths are not about things that you are good at - although knowing your strengths may help you recognise the things that you are likely to be good at. Everyone possesses all 24 character strengths in different degrees, so each person has a truly unique character profile. These strengths are the key to you being your best self.
Students completed a survey to help further identify their own character strengths. We look forward to seeing how our Year 6 2020 students use their character strengths to be their best learners and leaders.
Further information on Character Strengths can be found at http://www.viacharacter.org You can also take the free questionnaire to find out your own character strengths.
Wishing all families a safe and merry Christmas. Enjoy the special time with your families over the holidays.
Looking forward to 2020!
Regards

Catholic Education Today 2019 Term 4
This edition begins with a focus on Advent: a season of endurance and hope and a call to action. The time of the year can be a time of change for many students and an article by Catholic School Parents Victoria examines the way the whole family can experience education transitions.
Thank you to the families who have returned their School Fee Preferred Method information. If you have not yet returned this information please do so before this Wednesday, 18 December. The form is attached to the newsletter. Update of Family Fee Arrangements.pdf
Indigenous Garden Ceremony
A huge thank you to all those involved in the wonderful opening of our Indigenous garden. Special mention to Kellie and Keith Clark who have worked tirelessly in preparing the garden and Kellie for organising the day and the ceremony.
This area was originally designed and development commenced in 2011 in order to celebrate Our Lady Star of the Sea’s 30 year anniversary which was coming up in the following year, 2012. The area was established as a quiet space for passive play within our school grounds. As the design and construction was almost complete by many hard working parents and members of the school community, the idea evolved to surround the amphitheatre with an indigenous garden.
This idea was inspired by the life of Rory McCaffrey, a special young man whose life was tragically cut short far too early. Rory was almost 17 and was very passionate about Indigenous Culture, social justice and Reconciliation.
After having the opportunity to visit Aboriginal communities in central Australia. Rory was shocked and saddened at the two completely different worlds that existed within Australia. It was Rory’s belief that we, who have so much, cannot sit by and watch those who do not.
Rory’s sister Keely, was a student here at Star of the Sea. Keely was about to commence Year 3, with Miss Lizzie back in 2012 when this area was first established. We welcomed Keely and her father Tony McCaffrey back to Star of the Sea on this very special occasion.
The “Spreading the Message” program which our year 3 students participated in on the day with Corrina was created by the Rory McCaffrey Reconciliation Collaborative for young Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians in schools and communities to form relationships and increase cultural understanding, to give a voice to young Aboriginal people and and to educate those of us who are not Aboriginal to better understand their culture and stories.
The name decided on for this passive area is:
didalaa kitjala
Which translates to: a calm place to meet with friends
1st Kai Ashton
2nd Kiki Mobbs
3rd Claire Francis
Earlier this term we asked for responses to the possibility of investigating the provision of Out of School Hours Care at Our Lady Star of the Sea school. Thank you to families who responded. We are continuing to investigate/consult. There will be nothing on offer for Term 1 2020. We will keep you updated.
