Dear God,
Please bless all grandparents.
Thank you for the life they gave through our parents and ourselves.
For the ways they help us and make us strong, we give thanks.
For the ways they love us no matter what, we rejoice.
For the ways they have paved the road that leads us here, we are grateful.
Let them grow in wisdom and joy in life.
Let them find peace and rest from their work.
Let them be healed of every sickness and pain.
And let them see with their own eyes the glory of your Son, Jesus, in the love of their children and grandchildren.
Bless them always until they come to rest in you.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Dear Parents and Carers
Last weekend,World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly was celebrated. Pope Francis asks us all together to offer a prayer honouring our dear Grandparents and the Elderly:
We pray for the elderly, who represent the roots and memory of a people; may their experience and wisdom help young people to look towards the future with hope and responsibility.
Our Year Prep-6 classes are engaging in a History theme for our Inquiry Learning this term with many exciting learning opportunities both onsite and offsite. A “Big Bang Day” for our Year Prep and Year One students saw many grandparents come in and enjoy some time with their grandchildren. It was a wonderful event which showed love, community spirit, respectful relationships and pure joy in action. Many grandparents brought in historical items and treasures to share with students and there was also opportunities to engage in play and other learning tasks. This was a phenomenal event and certainly warmed our hearts. Year Prep will be having their grandparents visit in October. Due to the size of our school we cannot invite all grandparents in on the one day however are discussing ways we may be able to rethink this moving forward. Here is an IMOVIE to enjoy that captures the specialness of the day.
Family Canvases: Great job to all our families for the work you have done on your family portrait canvases. They look amazing! If you get a chance please feel free to come in and have a look but here are a couple of photos below. Thank you also to all involved in mounting them on the wall including Dave Skahill, Kylene Gray and Rebecca Nancarrow. This was a huge task but looks great.
COVID Message: Thank you for your respect regarding mask wearing within our school community when indoors. As you are aware we have been asked to strongly encourage that students aged eight and over and all staff to wear masks in class. We have limited supply at school and can provide these to your children daily or better still your child brings in a reusable material mask. This is not mandated and if you do not want your child to wear a mask please email your classroom teacher and copy Kerryn in. Parents and visitors are also being asked to wear a mask indoors.
When combined with our existing COVIDSafe measures, which include air purifiers, improved ventilation and hand hygiene, this action will help make sure as many students and staff as possible are protected from COVID-19 and other winter illnesses.
As this wave continues we are also being asked to complete thorough risk assessments around any events moving forward. Please know that in all decisions we will be practical and sensible but do what we can to continue the wonderful plans we have for the student’s learning in a COVID safe way.
Technology - SAVE THE DATE!
Technology is an integral part of students' lives and their learning.
To provide you with guidance and expertise in this area we have a Parent Information Night on Tuesday 13th September 7 pm-8.30 pm presented by Leigh Bartlett. This session will be focusing on how the online world intersects with families and the strategies for conversations about digital footprints and how to support young students as they begin to explore the online worlds. We invite you all to attend. This will be held in Djila Tjarri at no cost to you.
40 Years Celebration day:

At Our Lady Star of the Sea, teachers recognise the importance of a unified and consistent approach to the management of student’s behaviour through Restorative Practices. The Restorative Practices Strategies used at our school include: Circle Time, Affective Questioning, Restorative Circles and Conflict Resolution.
Restorative Practices
Restorative Practices involve the building of positive relationships and establishing a supportive environment that is fair, consistent and democratic. The underlying principle is that relationships are important, and when a harmful or disruptive incident occurs, the focus is on the harm caused to the relationship and the subsequent repairing of that harm; rather than what rule has been broken and therefore what consequences will be imposed.

Affective Questioning & Restorative Circles
Restorative circles are used by Our Lady Star of the Sea staff when speaking to students about behaviour and incidents. Restorative Circles allow the teacher to demonstrate empathy, teach children how to resolve conflict, and most importantly, allow students to have voice. Our Lady Star of the Sea staff have a consistent approach to using restorative circles, using Affective Questions to help students to reflect on what happened, how they felt, how they chose to respond, the impact of choices made, how they could have responded differently and the impact on how they might have felt as a result of making a different choice.
Examples of Affective Questioning:
What happened?
What were you thinking at the time? What are you thinking now?
What strategy did you use to de-escalate? Safety Plan)
Who has been affected by what you did? How?
What needs to happen to make things better? Any other ideas?
