Anzac Day marks the day that Australian and New Zealand
soldiers landed at Gallipoli during the First World War.
Although it was a great defeat with great loss of life, it has become
synonymous with courage, self-sacrifice, endurance and mateship.
On this day we remember not only the Anzacs but also
all those who have served in other wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.
On this day we remember those who have been prepared to give of themselves to keep peace for all of us.
God of love and liberty, we bring our thanks for the peace and security we enjoy,
which was won for us through the courage and devotion of those who gave their lives in time of war.
We pray that their labour and sacrifice may not be in vain, but that their spirit may live on in us and in generations to come.
We pray that the liberty, truth and justice which they sought to preserve may be seen and known in all the nations upon earth.
May we remember in kind and prayer those who gave unconditionally for the peace and security we experience in our land, Australia.
In our current climate, we pray for all who are working to protect the health of all the Australian community
most especially our Health Care workers and those working in essential services.
This we pray in the name of the one who gave his life for the sake of the world, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope things are going well for you and your families as we all work together to ensure the health and wellbeing of all in our community.
It is hard to believe we are into Week 3 of our Learning from Home Program. I hope you have enjoyed the way it has evolved over the last week and the opportunity for your children to connect in “virtually'' with teachers and each other.
I also hope some of the adjustments happening along the way are supporting you such as teachers adding to the first slide about what needs to be uploaded each day.

Time Allocations For Learning from Home: You will notice that the teachers have estimated how long each lesson should take your child to complete. As well as being a great guide for you, this is also important for us to determine how your child is managing with the set task and how much they are able to complete in this timeframe.
Attendance : As a school we are accountable for attendance and roll marking. Therefore, we ask that if your child is unwell or having a day off from learning as per parent choice to let your teacher know. If they are not able to complete most learning each day or not able to complete any of the learning for the day or within the week to let your teacher know. Teachers are marking students as present based on the learning that is coming in and /or their interaction with you or their students throughout the day. If some learning is coming in and you have let the teacher know you are completing the best you can we are also able to mark your child as present.
Website: You will notice on the website a COVID- 19 tab which has a link to the landing page. It also has the comprehensive letter with expectations for remote and onsite learning, along with our school based policies relating to remote learning that was sent out at the beginning of Term 2.
Reporting: At this stage, yet to be confirmed, the advice we have received from Catholic Education Melbourne is that we will be reporting on English, Maths, RE, and anything else that we have substantially taught during Semester One.
Pupil Free Day: Friday 8 May for the staff to remotely participate in Mathematics Professional Learning with Peter Sullivan as was originally planned. On this day there will be no onsite care and supervision available and no slides provided for learning. Your children will have the day off formal learning while the staff will be upskilling in their professional learning as per our annual action plan.
New Building Works: An update on the new building works. An estimated timeline now is to begin building works approximately mid July. In the meantime the shed will be taken down and the new shed will be built out the back of the school near the fence of the senior playground.
New and improved outdoor area: Our new outdoor area is complete near the Purple Hub and gaga pit. This has really tidied up this section of the yard for students and is yet another area to gather and learn together in. Here are some photos.
Time to Come In Bear: A gorgeous story for your children about social distancing.
Thank you and congratulations to you on the great learning you are doing with your children. We as a staff are very impressed with what is coming back in. Please know that it is ok to do the best you can and we know that it can be a real struggle some days.
If you are wishing to clarify or seek any further support please do not hesitate to make contact and we will continue to keep you updated as any new information comes to light.
I leave you with this insightful, hopeful and thought provoking reflection of the other ways our students will grow and learn during these times.
COVID-19 Kids – what if?
When people say kids are going to be ‘behind’ I say, behind what?? Not each other- they’re all in the same boat. Only ‘behind’ the age expectations of a curriculum that currently has limited context due to these extraordinary circumstances. In front on so many other more important fronts I say.
What if instead of “behind” this group of kids is advanced because of this.
What if they have more empathy, they enjoy family connection, they can be more creative and entertain themselves, they love to read, they love to express themselves in writing.
What if they enjoy the simple things, like their own backyard and sitting near a window in the quiet?
What if they notice the birds and the dates the different flowers emerge, and the calming renewal of a gentle rain shower?
What if this generation is the one to learn to cook, organize their space, do their laundry, and keep a well-run home?
What if they learn to stretch a dollar and to live with less?
What if they learn to plan shopping trips and meals at home?
What if they learn the value of eating together as a family and finding the good to share in the small delights of the everyday?
What if they are the ones to place great value on our teachers and educational professionals, librarians, public servants and the previously invisible essential support workers like truck drivers, grocers, cashiers, custodians, logistics, and health care workers and their supporting staff, just to name a few of the millions taking care of us right now while we are sheltered in place?
What if among these children, a great leader emerges who had the benefit of a slower pace and a simpler life, who has a fine sense of empathy and care and concern for fellow humans.
What if he or she truly learns what really matters in all this…
Warmest wishes to you all for the fortnight ahead
Kerryn
Tips for staying safe online during the COVID-19 pandemic
Staying connected online has never been more important, now that many of us are physically isolated from family members, friends, colleagues and support networks.
The internet is a great way to socialise, learn, work, play and be entertained. But there are also risks.
So eSafety is adding new content every day to help you stay safe online.
As we act to slow the spread of coronavirus, all children who can learn at home must learn from home. However, schools are able to make exceptions for children of parents who cannot work from home, and vulnerable children, including:
- children in out-of-home care
- children deemed by Child Protection and/or Family Services to be at risk of harm
- children identified by the school as vulnerable.
Physical distancing provisions and good hygiene practices will continue to be made to ensure safety for students and teachers. To allow for this, most teachers will also be working remotely. Any child attending school will engage in the same remote learning as those at home.
To help our school plan for the physical distancing provisions required, parents whose children must attend onsite learning need to complete the Onsite Learning survey.
Please note, to ensure information is accurate and up to date, this survey needs to be completed every 2 weeks.
Click here to access the Onsite Learning Survey Week 5 & 6.
If you have any questions regarding onsite learning, please contact Paul Anderson (Deputy Principal) panderson@staroceangrove.catholic.edu.au
CSEF - CAMP, SPORT AND EXCURSION FUND
INFORMATION FOR PARENTS
Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) helps ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities. It is part of making Victoria the Education State and the Government’s commitment to breaking the link between a student’s background and their outcomes.
School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors. Excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works while sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are a part of a healthy curriculum.
CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities.
If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.
The annual CSEF amount per student is:
- $150 for primary school students
HOW TO APPLY
New applicants should Click here for CSEF Application Form or contact the school office to obtain a CSEF application form.
