God of equality let us pray for those who work for Caritas Australia, that they may continue their work with love and commitment.
God of fairness let us pray for those who are supported and encouraged by
the work of Caritas Australia, that they may live with dignity and self-respect.
God of love let us pray for ourselves that, through our generosity, we may act
with compassion and justice.
We asks this prayer through your Son, Jesus, who is the lived
example of fairness, justice and equality. Amen
Sadly a much valued past staff member, Gabrielle Millar passed away last week. Gabrielle worked at Our Lady Star of the Sea for 25 years, from 1986 to 2011. Gabrielle was also responsible for our beautiful mural on our shed. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.
Dear Parents,
At our Beginning of Year Mass we spoke of faith, hope and love.
Faith is symbolised by the cross. What Jesus did for us on the cross is the centre of our faith. It is what lets us know that God loves us and is our friend. Faith in what Jesus did for each one of us, gives us a sense of purpose. We should always be thankful to God for the gift of God’s love shown us in the cross of Jesus.
Hope is symbolised by the anchor. Boats need an anchor to hold them safe and steadfast in their place. Without an anchor, a boat will drift aimlessly and end up in dangerous waters. Where does hope come from? Hope comes from God. Trusting in God allows us to hope in something bigger and better, something different from what might be happening around us. Hope helps us to reach out to others – for help and support and to give it too.
Love is symbolised by a heart. Jesus spent his time caring for people, healing people, teaching people about God and showing them the best way to live. That’s what he asks of us as his followers. We are called by Jesus to be loving and that means taking care of each other, watching out for each other, treating each other with respect and always seeking good things for each other.
During this Lenten season may we continue to grow together in faith, hope and love.

Catholic Education Week Sunday 15 March to Sunday 22 March 2020.
Catholic schools recognise Catholic Education Week 2020 as a time to celebrate the education Catholic schools, like Our Lady Star of the Sea, offers to families and to the community. Catholic schools pride themselves on creating environments where students have opportunities to excel academically, spiritually and socially. The theme for Catholic Education Week for 2020 is The Future is Listening.
Our Year 6 Term 1 School Leaders will be attending Mass for Schools in St Patrick's Cathedral to be held on Tuesday 17 March . Following the Mass, a Concert will be held in the Treasury Gardens for primary students. Catholic Education Week will also be celebrated at our local school level with Earth Fest. This event enables students, staff, friends and family to come together to celebrate the spirit of their school community.
Earth Fest:
EarthFest is fast approaching and I encourage all to get involved. Thank you to the many who are already actively involved. Friday 20 March 4.30 pm -7.30 pm is the big event at the Ocean Grove Park. If you are able to volunteer some time during the event please sign up following the link here. Come on down to enjoy some dinner, some music, some great learning and fun. It will be a wonderful whole community event.
National Day of Action against Bullying Friday 20 March: Our Lady Star of the Sea is registered and will be celebrating the National Day of Action against Bullying. Year 2 JR will present an assembly focusing on the definition of bullying and strategies if you are being bullied. All children are encouraged to wear a touch of orange and then all students Year Prep-6 will be involved in a circle time within their class around being an upstander.
Cross Country: Congratulations to BOYD House on winning the Cross Country for 2020. Thank you to Lisa Grigg, staff and parents on a wonderful, well organised event. Congratulations to all the students for great participation, persistence and encouragement of each other.
Corona Virus (Covid 19):
Please be aware of the advice that if children become sick, have travelled internationally or have been in contact with someone who is a confirmed case, they should present immediately to a doctor and not attend school while unwell. If you or a member of your family should test positive to Covid 19 please notify the School immediately.
It is not deemed necessary to exclude any student who is well or has not had contact with a person with a confirmed case of the virus.
Our school always follows the advice of public health authorities in these circumstances and I would ask you to be especially aware of this current situation in the interest of public health. Thank you for your support in relation to this matter.
Things you can do to help educate your child at home as well as at school are
- Cough and sneeze into your elbow
- Wash hands and dry thoroughly after going to the toilet, touching your nose or mouth, coughing or sneezing etc
- Keep your hands away from your mouth/nose/eyes and don’t put toys and pencils etc in your mouth
Best wishes for the fortnight ahead
Kerryn
Next Friday 20th March we celebrate the National Day of Action Against Bullying. We are encouraging everyone to wear a touch of orange on the day. This might be a t-shirt, socks, hat or ribbons. If you don’t have anything orange you could bring an orange or a carrot for fruit snack. The children will take part in a Circle Time on the day that focus' on being an Upstander when they see behaviour that may be inappropriate or support someone who needs a hand.
Parents are an important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively if it happens. Stopping bullying involves everyone.
If your child talks to you about bullying:
- Listen calmly and get the full story. Your calm response is important to allow your child to tell you all about the situation. After they’ve told you their story, ask questions to get more details if you need: who, what, where, when. Although you may feel some strong emotions about your child’s experience, try to keep calm to avoid more distress to your child.
- Reassure your child they are not to blame. Many children blame themselves and this may make them feel even worse. You could say things like, ‘That sounds really hard to deal with. No one should have to put up with that.’ or ‘I’m so glad you told me. You should be able to feel safe at school; that’s not fair at all’.
- Ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do. A critical part of your response is to avoid jumping in to solve the problem. While it is natural to want to protect your child, helping them to find their own solution is a better option. It helps them feel they have some power in the situation.
- Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies. The website has tips and ideas for different bullying situations. One idea is to practise strategies at home to help your child feel more confident. This may include role playing how to use the strategy with your child.
- Contact the school. Your child may be reluctant for you to do this, so discuss the idea and reassure them that the school would want to know and is able to help. Students from Years 3 - 6 are encouraged to use the Student Safety Concern Forms. Contact the school immediately if you have a concern about your child’s safety.
- Check in regularly with your child. Keep the conversation going. It can take time to resolve issues, so check in regularly with your child about their experiences and their feelings. Your ongoing support is important.
Thanks for your support to make Our Lady Star of the Sea a great school for everyone.

On the weekend I went to States in Warrnambool for Nippers. Most people camped in Warrnambool to get to the beach in time. I competed in all of the events. On day one we competed in 6 events the wade, wade relay, swim, board, sprint relay and the sprint. On day two we only had 4 events - the 500 meter run, flags, board relay and swim relay. The next day was finals and I was only in one event, it was my least favourite event, the swim. I finished up in 18th out of 29 kids. I thought I did really well for all of the events. I also got 3 medals for the 500 meter run where I came 3rd out of 81 kids. The next one is the individual sprint where I came 2nd and the sprint relay where we came 2nd. I had a really great time because we had fun as a team. Ollie Warren Yr 3
On my weekend I went to Warrnambool for Nippers State Championships. We stayed in a caravan, it was really fun but tiring. I participated in all the events except the swim. I got three medals. When we first got there I went to the park. We stayed up till 10:00pm and the next morning we got up at 6:30am to get ready for our first event which was the wade. After all our events we went back to our caravan with my friends .I am so proud of what I have achieved this year in my nippers career.

Travelsmart News - National Ride to School Day Friday 13 March
National Ride2School Day is coming up on this Friday 13 March. We are registered as a school and we will be providing stickers and prizes for everyone who participates. It would be great if we can have many riders and walkers on this day. If you cannot ride or walk it would be great to walk a short, safe distance from school so that you are still making an effort to travel actively and be part of the day.
Thanks, Travelsmart leaders
Raffle tickets have been sent home with children. Families are asked to donate one Easter Egg per family. Please send in tickets and eggs no later than Tuesday 24 March. It would be wonderful if you could separate each ticket and fold up individually when returning. Lets do our best to avoid returning in snap lock bags. Many thanks in advance.
