God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time, accepting hardship as a pathway to peace, taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it.
Trusting that You will make all things right, if I surrender to your will, so that I may be reasonably happy in life, and supremely happy with you in the next.
Amen
I trust you had a lovely long weekend as a family and enjoyed the extra day of rest.
This week is Catholic Education Week from Sunday 10 March- Sunday 17 March 2019. This is a time to celebrate the education Our Lady Star of the Sea school offers to families and to the community. Catholic schools pride themselves on creating environments where students have opportunities to excel academically, spiritually and socially. The theme for this year’s Catholic Education Week is ‘Growing Young in Christ.”
This week sees a range of events in our learning community enabling students, staff, friends and family to come together to celebrate the spirit of their Catholic school community. We have our whole school Athletics Day tomorrow at Landy Field which sees our students actively participate with their peers in team based and individual athletic events. We look forward to seeing all who can make it there, to enjoy the fun, encouragement and spirit of the event.
On Friday our school learning community will recognise and participate in the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence to say 'Bullying. No Way!' which brings an opportunity to link the gospel values of love, kindness and compassion with a stand against bullying behaviours and violence and to appreciate differences in ourselves and others. Important values for our school. We will be having a whole school assembly and each class will participate in a Circle Time focusing on kind behaviours. Different classes will also be entering a poster competition “Be Kind, Lend a Hand”. The Anti bullying website for parents and carers is a great resource for you to access in supporting your child.
At this time of the year some students can experience heightened asthma. Here is a copy of our asthma policy for you to view. Asthma Management Policy
Looking forward to seeing you throughout Catholic Education Week.
Best wishes for the week ahead,
Kerryn Sells
At Our Lady Star of the Sea we aim to create a safe and supportive school community for everyone.
This Friday 15 March we celebrate the National Day of Action Against Bullying. We are encouraging everyone to wear a touch of orange on the day. This might be a t-shirt, socks, hat or ribbons. If you don’t have anything orange you could bring an orange or a carrot for fruit snack. The children will take part in a Circle Time on the day that focus' on using their Super Power to be an Upstander when they see behaviour that may be inappropriate or support someone who needs a hand.
Parents are an important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively if it happens. Stopping bullying involves everyone.
If your child talks to you about bullying:
- Listen calmly and get the full story. Your calm response is important to allow your child to tell you all about the situation. After they’ve told you their story, ask questions to get more details if you need: who, what, where, when. Although you may feel some strong emotions about your child’s experience, try to keep calm to avoid more distress to your child.
- Reassure your child they are not to blame. Many children blame themselves and this may make them feel even worse. You could say things like, ‘That sounds really hard to deal with. No one should have to put up with that.’ or ‘I’m so glad you told me. You should be able to feel safe at school; that’s not fair at all’.
- Ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do. A critical part of your response is to avoid jumping in to solve the problem. While it is natural to want to protect your child, helping them to find their own solution is a better option. It helps them feel they have some power in the situation.
- Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies. The website has tips and ideas for different bullying situations. One idea is to practise strategies at home to help your child feel more confident.
- Contact the school, firstly via the classroom teacher. Your child may be reluctant for you to do this, so discuss the idea and reassure them that the school would want to know and is able to help. Students are encouraged to use the Student Safety Concern Forms. Contact the school immediately if you have a concern about your child’s safety.
- Check in regularly with your child. Keep the conversation going. It can take time to resolve issues, so check in regularly with your child about their experiences and their feelings. Your ongoing support is important.
Thanks for your support to make Our Lady Star of the Sea a great school for everyone.

National Ride2School Day is coming up on this Friday 22 March. We are registered as a school and we will be providing stickers and prizes for everyone who participates. It would be great if we can have many riders and walkers on this day. If you cannot ride or walk it would be great to walk a short, safe distance from school so that you are still making an effort to travel actively and be part of the day.
Thanks, Travelsmart leaders
